Buiding bridges
|
| Q |
I cannot build bridges. |
| |
|
| A |
Make sure you drag the road
from at least 4 tiles back from the water's edge and also towards a
point at least 4 tiles from the water's edge at the other side of the
river.
Also make sure that there are no underground objects like water pipes
or subways near or under where you need the bridge, it will not work
until you demolish them. |

City:
Bridges
(57 Kb)
Sent in by: MadMikey |
This
non-city started just as an example of what bridge type was created
depending on the number of tiles of water crossed. This also
has a visual example of the steps required to build adjacent bridges
(see the south corner; build a bridge, demolish the center span, build
a 2nd bridge one tile away, etc.), and also has examples of using power
lines to build "tree-less" boulevards, how various types of bridges
look when combined, the differences in pier placement depending on the
direction of the water being crossed and oddities such as what happens
at the ends of multiple power lines and adjacent highway bridges
crossing water.
Enjoy,

Highways, building onramps
|
| Q |
How to build onramps? |
| |
|
| A |
There are different ways to
make onramps but either you can lay the road parallel to the highway
and make sure it's past the end for about three tiles or you can lay
the road at right angles to the highway. For an example look below.
Another inetersting possibility is to make a highway crossing and
connect them by making onramps in the corners like shown below.
For some examples of what is possible with highways and onramps, look

Highways, building tunnels
|
| Q |
How to build highway tunnels? |
| |
|
| A |
This seems to be a problem for almost everyone,
the
thing is that when you try to build a highway tunnel, most of the time
you get a message which tells you that building the tunnel isn't
possible because buildings might get damaged, even when there are no
structures or anything else around.
Well, there is a way to build one with the following steps. For now
it's the only solution:
|
| 1. |
Approximately 10 tiles before the
hill where you want the HW tunnel, draw a small body
of water using the water tool, in the path of the highway. (picture
below).
|
| 2. |
Lower some tiles before
the water to be able to build a bridge.
|
| 3. |
Build your highway across the body of water
and to the hill in one shot. (picture below). You will get a message to
build a bridge. Answer YES
to build the bridge then you will get another message to build a
tunnel. Answer YES and you'll get the tunnel. (picture below).
|
| 4. |
You can then remove the bridge and build
your highway to the tunnel and level the
terrain to your needs.
|
|
|
|
Notes:
- The hill should be high enough to accept a tunnel.
- Be sure that there is no pipe or subway in the path of your highway
- You can destroy the highway section before the tunnel
entrance and level
the terrain and build an avenue to the tunnel.

City:
Highway
(18 Kb)
Sent in by: James Kuyper |
This city contains nothing but highways, on/off ramps, and roads,
intersecting in every possible way. It's laid out so that every road is
as close to the adjacent highway intersections as the ramp-placement
rules allow. Graphically recording those minimum distances was the
reason I created this city.

Islands,
connecting without
powerlines
|
I found a way to give islands power without
connecting them with those
ugly powerlines over water. The thing with electricity in SimCity
is the fact that all tiles in a circle of two tiles around a powered
tile also have power. When you have islands in one of your cities you
can use this to connect the islands with power by laying marina's
between the islands, like shown on the right. The marina's
have the function to pass through the power. Since they
also make the Sims happier it's giving you two advantages into one.

Population
problems
|
| Q |
My population has suddenly
dropped, but everything looks OK |
| |
|
| A1 |
Check your education and
unemployement levels, and how many recreational facilities you
have. Low education, high unemployement or lack of parks and
other recreational facilities may lead the sims to relocate. |
| |
|
| Tip1 |
Demolish some of the abondoned
buildings and replace them with playgrounds, parks, museums, libraries,
whatever fits. |
| |
|
| A2 |
Check your facilities for
aging
power plants, pumping stations, and so forth. Also check for
broken pipes and subway tunnels. |
| |
|
| Tip2 |
If "everything" looks ok, try
just adding more pipeline to already watered areas, sometimes this will
"break the cycle" and demand will increase. |
|
Pumping
stations
|
| Tip |
Pumping stations only reach
their best capacity,
1500 cubic meters/month, when placed next to (immediately adjoining)
fresh water. Placing a pumping station 2 tiles from the
water's edge (as in behind an existing pumping station) drops the 2nd
station's capacity
to 300 cubic meters/month - not too cost effective! |
|
| Seaports |
| |
|
| Q |
My seaport won't develop, what's wrong? |
| |
|
| A |
Make sure you have at least 5 tiles of water in
front of your seaport for the piers to develop, and
that the shoreline is even. Also make sure that the water is deep
enough. |
|
| Screenshots |
| |
|
| There are two options in
making sreenshots of your city: |
|
|
| 1 |
The first option to make a screenshot is by
pressing the "PrintScreen" key on your keyboard. Windows will then
store the current content of your screen in its memory. To retrieve
this content, a graphics editing program is needed. In the program of
your choice, paste it as a new image. This option will allow you to
zoom in and make a sreenshot of whatever view you like. |
| |
|
| 2 |
The second option will only give you an overview
screenshot of your city and is only available
when you have the BAT-patch installed. While playing
the game, press "F9" on your keyboard. When doing this,
a ".bmp" and a ".txt" file are stored in the directory where
your city is located in. The ".bmp" file is the overview screenshot.
The ".txt" file contains
statistics information. |

| Turning
cheats off |
| |
|
| Q |
Once you've turned on a cheat for a game, can you
turn it off again later? Basically, I'd like to use the "i am weak"
cheat to build the infrastructure for my city in the beginning and then
turn it off again to really start playing. Is this possible? |
| |
|
| A |
It is possible to turn a cheat like "i am
weak" off for a
city by either restarting the game or just by loading the city again.
The last option is ofcourse the fastest solution. Most cheats however
are there to stay and can't be undone. |

Underwater
water pipes and subways
|
| Q |
How can I run water pipes or
subways under water? |
| |
|
| A1 |
Just use the same "logic" as if
you were going over hills, etc. Don't try a steep terrain,
try to ensure a "gentle slope" and only lay them on level surfaces once
you've reached the desired depth. |
| |
|
| A2 |
Consider each tile has a
"corner" named A, B, C and D. A and B form one side of the
tile - C and D are opposite. A and B should be the same
height, as should C and D - and the height difference between A and C
should ideally be 13 metres or less. Once "below sea level"
just run the pipes/tubes across level terrain. |
| |
|
| Tip1 |
If you have an earthquake
you'll need to check, repair and even alter terrain underwater - they
seem to get hit first and suffer the most damage. |
| |
|
| Tip2 |
Even if disasters are "turned
off" in your city, keep checking the pipes and subways - they have a
nasty habit of breaking, especially in salt water, even though you
haven't touched the area in several simyears... |
